I'm glad PA doesn't require a front plate.
But this got me curious on which states do/don't. I found a list and here's a quick map I made. Kind of interesting. Texas, Ohio, Virginia, & Maryland seem to be surrounded.

With my car the front plate bracket was delivered as a kit in the trunk. I asked them not to install it because I was going to buy an aftermarket bracket. Otherwise the delivery prep mechanics would have installed it without asking. I will make sure to do the same with the next car.

Thanks for sharing that. I'd often wondered about Canada as I send quite a few of my 5th gen license plate brackets there, but I figured a front plate was only required in certain provinces like it's only required in certain states here in the US...
Interestingly enough, I'd say that about 60-70% of the 5th gen license plate brackets I ship out go to Texas. I hear it's really strict there... I can't even count how many times I've been pulled over here in Oregon for no front plate. In every vehicle I've tried to get away with it in... That's just my luck I guess. |

Unfortunately when I bought mine is was already installed on the front bumper. Next time I will have them leave it off and I will gladly pay the ticket/s. Although her being a garage queen with 4500 miles since I bought it new in 2012 my chances are slim.

I was pulled over for it once after owning it for two years. The officer said it looked new so "I'm sure the dealer just forgot" and asked that I get one put on. Didn't ticket me or anything. Haven't done it and don't plan on it. In CA it's not good enough to put it in the windshield either, otherwise I would just do that.

With the threat of terrorism on the rise, police forces/ states are turning to technology to track vehicles. Here in New York/ New Jersey the police cars have plate readers that scan front and rear license plates as they pass vehicles and the information is instantly displayed on a screen inside the police car and transferred to a central data base for verification. As terrorist threats, amber alerts, etc. continue to grow in numbers, I expect all states to eventually utilize this new technology which makes it necessary for each vehicle to have two license plates.

Front license plates are a joke. A cruel cruel joke.
If they're gonna continue to implement them, they really should think about revising the size of the plates. They've had the same standard since 1956. Why can't the front be smaller since it doesn't need any extra space for registration tags? or better yet. A small sticker for the windshield that has the plate number on it, then the normal plate out back. The shape of them just doesn't fit with the fronts of modern cars. You spend thousands of dollars to purchase a car only to have the front of the car ruined by a 6x12 ugly piece of metal. ::off soap box:: |
