Exclamation Official: 6th Gen Camaro Production to Move to U.S. Lansing Grand River Plant

Quote:
GM Press Release:

Next-Generation Chevy Camaro to Be Built in the U.S.

GM announced today the next-generation Chevrolet Camaro will be assembled at the Lansing Grand River (LGR) Assembly Plant in Lansing, Michigan. This decision is based on a comprehensive business case.

Lower capital investment and improved production efficiencies were key factors in the business case. The Camaro is the only rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicle built at Oshawa. Assembling the next-generation Camaro at LGR consolidates the RWD assembly with the Cadillac CTS and ATS. As a result, GM will continue to deliver top-quality vehicles as efficiently as possible.

GM will continue to meet the production targets agreed to with the Canadian and Ontario governments during the 2009 restructuring.

Production of the current generation Chevrolet Camaro will continue on the flexible manufacturing line at Oshawa Assembly until the end of the current product lifecycle. The Buick Regal continues to be produced there, and GM recently invested $185 million to support the launch of two new products on the flex line as well: the all-new Cadillac XTS and the next-generation Chevrolet Impala scheduled to launch in 2013. In addition, GM recently announced it will add a third shift to support the launch of the new Impala there. The consolidated line at Oshawa Assembly will continue to produce the current generation Chevrolet Impala and Equinox until June 2014.

Today, GM announced that production of the next-generation Camaro will move from Oshawa Assembly to Lansing, Mich. This will inevitably raise some questions and speculation about what the announcement means for the future of Camaro.

For now, we can tell you that it does mean Chevrolet is committed to the Camaro, and we are already planning for the arrival of the sixth-generation car. It does not mean we are ready to announce the timing of the next-generation, or to confirm any details about a future Camaro.

Introduced as a 2010 model year, the fifth-generation Camaro still continues to be a success thanks to fans like you -- and we are not done yet. This year alone, we launched the Camaro ZL1 coupe and convertible, the Camaro 1LE, and introduced the Camaro Hot Wheels edition. We still have more news to come, and expect the fifth-generation Camaro, built by the team in Oshawa, will continue to bring new people to the Camaro community.

Thanks for your support, and we look forward to sharing more Camaro news with you in the future.

More like Alpha-based cars are already being built at Lansing Grand River.

If it did then Michigan is already reaping the benefits of right to work and personal freedom.

It will be nice to see it built stateside again. What happens to Oshawa? Get a new platform on the switchover or are they done up there? It seems that the plant was just redone not too long ago...cannot be obsolete yet can it?

They'll maintain Epsilon-II production. Probably Equinox overflow as well.

I'm sure Oshawa is going to play a part in GM global manufacturing.

Look, they were built in the U.S. before, and they've been built in Canada for almost 1/2 the time the Camaro's been around. So to see them move the final assembly back to the states isn't majorly upsetting. Obviously it is to the Oshawa community, but apparently GM feels it makes better business sense going forward.

Personally, I think the alpha has a whole lot to do with it, but perhaps a little bit of right to work as well. It'll be interesting if any other alphas end up in Oshawa. If it does, then there may be other reasons.

Oshawa will be fine, they do a great job and GM will keep them working. I am very proud of my Oshawa built Camaro, but I like the idea of the Camaro beong built stateside.

GM to move Camaro production from Ontario to Lansing plant

By Melissa Burden
The Detroit News

The Camaro is a rear-wheel drive vehicle, as are the CTS and ATS, built in Lansing. (GM)

General Motors Co. will move production of the Chevrolet Camaro from Oshawa, Ontario, to its Lansing Grand River plant, the automaker announced Wednesday.

GM will move the next generation of the muscle car from Ontario to the Lansing plant, which builds the Cadillac CTS and ATS. The shift is likely to occur within a few years.

The last all-new Camaro came for the 2010 model year.

GM, in a statement, cited lower capital investments and production efficiencies as a key factor for moving production of the vehicle.

The Camaro is built in Oshawa on the same line as the Buick Regal and Cadillac XTS. Oshawa will build the next-generation Chevrolet Impala. Those cars are front-wheel drive models.

The Camaro is a rear-wheel drive vehicle, as are the CTS and ATS, built in Lansing, currently a two-shift plant.

Sales of the Camaro year-to-date through November are down 3.6 percent compared with the same period in 2011.

Karl Henkel contributed.

If it is then great. I only hope that it's built in Lansing with the same pride and quality it is built with in Oshawa. Mike Judge and the Oshawa crew are top notch. Both in building cars and within the Camaro community.
