According to this article the new Cadillac ATS could have this new Eco-Tec 2.0 Turbo Four Cylinder good for 280hp. I wonder if the 6th gen Camaro will have a four cylinder offered with more power eventually along with a V6 & V8?

Debuting back in 2006, General Motors first became famous for the 2.0-liter displacement with the coveted LNF. The Ecotec four-cylinder was quickly made famous for its 260 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque. Since then the 2.0-liter has been a hot topic in regards to GM applications, but GMI hears it’s about to get hotter with the launch of an all-new 2.0-liter turbo.

Today the LNF is no longer being utilized in any vehicles, however a variation of the engine is still in production for the Buick Regal Turbo and Regal GS in North America, and the Opel Insignia in Europe. The 2.0-liter mill in all three applications wears the name LHU.

In the Regal Turbo and Insignia the engine generates a modest 220 horsepower and 258 foot-pounds of torque, while the high-output Regal GS generates 270 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque.

Much confusion has surfaced that the 2.0-liter turbo in the Regal GS is the "new" 2.0-liter, but that is incorrect. In the Regal GS GM has upped the boost level on the turbocharger and increased exhaust flow to generate the increased power figures. Because the modifications are minimal, it is simply referred to as the high output version of the LHU.

According to sources familiar with engine development, GM is readying an all-new Ecotec 2.0-liter turbo engine. The engine is expected to debut in 2012 in the upcoming Cadillac small sedan, codenamed ATS. Sources also state that the engine will be the V-6 replacement for the all-new Chevrolet Malibu.

Exact power figures for the new 2.0-liter turbo are not known at this time, however sources told GMI to expect it to generate between 270 and 280 horsepower. The engine is reportedly an all-new design and will be part of the new family of Ecotec four-cylinders at GM, joining the recently announced Ecotec 2.5-liter, also found in the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.

Back in August GMI confirmed that future GM midsize sedans would only see four-cylinder power. The news of this new 2.0-turbo suggests that the V-6 exodus in the GM midsize sedan lineup may not be as much of a problem as originally thought.

GMI's source concluded by saying that the new 2.0-liter turbo will be "The engine of choice" at GM going forward.

I doubt if they would offer all three in the same car.

I can see offering a 4 or a 6, or a 6 or an 8, but not all three.

Now before everyone flips over "OMG4CYLINDERCAMAROWTFGMWOULDBESOSTUPID," remember that turbocharger = full torque at very low RPMs.

i've heard those rumors, and that the v8 might be obsolete from sports cars altogether in a few years. that's only a very small and superstitious reason that i decided to buy one now.

keeping it real, you'll probably be seeing v8's in sports cars until flying cars are invented. i just don't really see the v8 elimination anytime soon no matter how anal the EPA gets.

As long as it has enough horsepower, I don't really care if it's a 4, a 6, an 8, or a 10.
And I don't really car how they make the horsepower, whether it a Turbo, supercharged or just a whole lot of hamsters.

Fenwick, wrong, belt driven supercharger=torque at low rpm. gas driven turbocharged requires high rpm to get boost.

I would have to argue that, for GM their 2.0 SC hit max torque at 4400 rpm. While the 2.0 TC hit max torque at 2000 rpm, kinda blows your theory out of the water.

either way...4 cylinder engine = death of Camaro. The Camaro is a classic american muscle car, not ricer or euro sport. If they can't keep it rear-wheel drive and large displacement I'd just as soon see them stop making it. Just my .02 cents

It's true about turbos. The 2.0T in my GTI put out max torque starting at 1800rpm. A whole 217lb/ft, if IIRC. Only had 200hp.

The problem is that there's no replacement for displacement. A turbo 4 still sounds awful, no matter how you tune it. Nothing will replace the thunder of a V8. And having a 2.0L motor versus a 6.2L motor means you feel every accessory (like the A/C compressor) kick on and off because the engine has so much less mass.

So, while I support better fuel economy...I absolutely loathe 4-cylinders, no matter what you do to them.

I do enjoy the supercharged 6 in the new Audi S4. On a dyno, it's got close to 400hp and the car is an absolute rocket with AWD. But it's weird to have all that power and the noise it's making is indicative of a small-displacement V6

Agreed...would not buy a 4-cyl Camaro. If they want to do that bring back the Chevette and make it a rocket

depends on the cubic inches feeding it and the size of the turbo

efficiency and gas mileage is a delicate balance.. building something to market is another story
