High Speed Management

I have some what of a newby question about speed management on the Camaro SS specifically...

Sport Mode - Automatic transmission that only requires throttle use

Manual Shift Mode - Automatic transmission that allows you to choose the gear with throttle use

For high speeds, lets say your already at pedal to the medal maybe pushing 130 mph and unable to gain that burst of speed any longer, just momentum building up quickly - would this mean that if you were manually selecting the gear and chose to downshift one or two gears, it would outperform the automatic sport mode or is the car just unable to provide that push regardless of the mode?

I recently was in a near perfect situation to get a safe , high speed run in my 2017 1SS. Leaving my A8 in "D" , in Track mode, and pedal to the metal...It shifted from 7th to 8th at 140 mph and the car was pulling strong. I lifted 15 mph later.

Believe me .....these cars PULL pretty strongly in "D".

That "D" isn't for Drive, it's for "Don't be scared".

If you were foot to floor the car should have been shifting 4th to 5th right around 140mph, not 7th to 8th.

It shouldn't have been shifting anything at 140MPH.
Top speed/gear @6600RPM

I calc'd with a 6000rpm redline and attributed a little converter slip as well. Didn't realize the A8 cars were shifting at 6600rpm now. Agree that now shifting should be occurring at 140mph. Definitely not a wide open 7-8 shift, which was my real point of contention anyways.

Yeah, if anything it would be a 5-6.
7-8 would be over 200MPH. Never going to see that happen.

I thought it was 7-8th. Things were happening fast. Excuse me for the error.

Oh, no worries. Some of us fellas just can't help pick apart what we see and hear when it sounds a little off to us. No disrespect - if you're knocking down 155mph your focus should be on the road, and not trying to figure out which gear your automatic is in - it's an automatic, it can decide for you!

I see, I'm understanding from the general consensus that while on Auto + D mode, pedal to the medal won't provide you as much push at high speeds than if I was in Manual mode or at minimum Auto + Sport/Track mode.

Don't own an auto, but at 130 I'm just shifting into 5th, because I want to. In 5th, at a smidge more than 5k rpm's, it's hitting almost 160. Don't go by what you see, go by what you feel.

Pic taken by my passenger, she immediately asked if we could do that again. F*($ yeah we can!
