When Breaking in a New Camaro

Is it still OK to drive in sport and track mode or should I leave it in touring?

It's quite okay. This is a proper sports/muscle car and the engine isn't made of cotton candy

You'll find extensive information on break-in philosophies here, just perform this search in a proper browser: "break-in site:camaro6.com"

A10 upshifts too soon in tour for "break in"
Kept mine in sport since delivery to keep the revs up and the load down.

YMMV....

The idea of break in is

1. not one speed for long periods
2. No over rev - past 4K, up or down shift
3. No speed past 80 - not 100% sure about this other than they think you will not meet 1 and 2

But my car is made of cotton candy

IIRC the C7's were limited to 4000rpm up to 500 miles.
After 500 the ecu said have at it.

Needless to say, after 500 miles I went to 5000rpm twice.
Oh the noes!

I adhered to all the other guidelines in the manual.

OK stupid question time - I have an automatic - is downshifting the same as when I just let off the gas to reduce speed/kind of like coasting?

Nope Normally the automatic transmission decides what the proper gear is based on speed, throttle position, drive mode, transmission mode as well as other inputs and parameters.

You can manually downshift with the left hand side paddle (and upshift with its right hand side counterpart). Alternatively, you can push the shift lever to the left to engage manual mode, and then shift up by pushing the lever up (forward), and down similarly, using opposite input.

Don't be afraid of missing a shift or switching to the wrong gear, the computer will prevent that, you can't do any serious harm to the transmission (but you probably do not want to go over 4000 rpm during the break-in period, so don't be too heavy handed with those downshifts).

Mode has nothing to do with it in the context that you asked but breaking down the A10 to it's shift points in those modes is just clown world level of being anal retentive.

Driving in sport and track mode should be totally fine.

Key recommendation is not to go past 4k rpm and also not to maintain constant speed for a long time.

Everyone guesses and never produces the fact sheet. We should have an official TrackPREP thread that stays on the top page of the forum.

The only thing I've done with new vehicles is to layoff the cruise control for the first 4 to 500 miles. I sure would go to the dragstrip and make back to back runs right away. But I just drive 'em.
