when is GM going to build us a street "drag car"?

it seems that all of their focus is primarily on the road course. the corvette and camaro are both now competeing against each other for king of the road. and in reality their offerings in the handling department are extrodinary!

i'm more of a camaro fan than a corvette fan. the corvette is more of you're fully trained MMA fighter ready for a sanctioned fight and the camaro is your tough as nails will fight anyone street fighter.

where is the cheaper, big engine, higher hp, fast, regular brakes and shocks package camaro from GM? I love the new Z\28! an ls7 camaro was always my dream car but for cruising i don't need solid gold rotors or shocks that are more advanced than a space shuttle and an MSRP of what may be 65+k.

just give me a regular SS price plus the engine cost. either LS7 or LSA. I don't need the rest of that handling nonsense on the street because to be honest i would never exceed any of these new camaros handling capabilities on the street.

I think it comes down to what the platform can best accomodate. The IRS is a big handicap on the dragstrip, no matter what you do. Maybe even more so than the weight. I agree with you though, 1/4 mile racing is more in line with what I think of when I think Camaro, and at $20 to run at a test and tune night, it is a few orders of magnitude more budget friendly than running on a road course or autocross event.

COPO Camaro. Done. Albeit very expensive and not street-able. I think Chevy is trying to shed the Camaros don't turn mantra.

All they need to do is offer the ZL1 in a similar weight package as the Z/28 loose the magnetic ride suspension and pump up the LSA to well over 650HP.

The bad things is that is would then cost more than the current ZL1.

The days of cheap speed are gone boys. Get over it.

cheap speed gone?

are you in the same decade I am?

not even 10 years ago a 12 second factory car was nearly unheard of.

not to mention throwing in a cam and going 11s with no effort.
small shot and into the 10s what more do you want?

10 second quarters used to be the domain of purpose built race cars or super high budget street cars that were gutted.
now we can have that for under 10k more than factory with a full interior running the stereo and the air conditioning.

if that's not cheap horsepower I dunno what is..
people seem to forget how expensive it was to build a 11 second or 10 second car before all this modern technology.

I remember spending 1000s and 1000s on my fox body 5.0s trying to get them into the 11s in street driven configs.
the only way to do it was to stroke to 347 TFS TW heads, radical cam, after market fully ported intake and then just then you might be at 11.99

Or we build our own beast for only 100lbs more; which frankly if you were building a DRAG /street Camaro with beefed up AOD and rear end.. an N/A 454-R block could out power and out duty an aluminum counterpart.

A reverse question might help: How do we street-legalize a COPO?
- tires
- full electronics
- airbags
- cats
- tailpipe exhaust
- register it at the DMV ?

What am I missing?

I don't think it could be registered at the DMV bc it doesnt have a VIN #, or can it ?

Looks like it can be done - using an engines serial number a VIN can be generated.

Maybe you'll get lucky and they will do a special edition SS the last year of production for the 5th gen like they did for the C6 Corvette (427 Convertible).

It could be an SS-427 or they could punch out the LS3 to a 396 and build an SS396 Camaro. Leave the brakes standard SS, build develop a drag suspension, give it smaller wheels that can fit some drag radials, and lighten it using the same ideas as the Z28. They should be able to price it right around the cost of the ZL1 if not a touch under. FBodfather, you listening???

I am hoping for this.

Seems like a lot of us want the same thing. Just an SS with a 427 that you can option out the same as any other SS. For me, a 427 1LE strictly for the factory gearing.
