If anything, I'd expect the six to get squeezed out. For everybody who already does not like the AFM in the V8, there would be several who would hate it in a six . . . just imagine what occasionally running as a 1.8L 3-cylinder might be like - a 2.0L four would be positively refined by comparison.

Yeah, AFM in a V6 just doesn't work--too much wear and tear because of poor balancing. Even with alternating firing patterns they seemed to have lots of issues. You would have to go back to I-6 to have AFM.
