The mounting pads on your convertor may have rusted or seized to the flywheel. You are not going to be able to push it back far enough to disconnect the convertor hub from the crank with the engine still connected. When I did mine, the engine did NOT want to separate from the transmission very easily. It took a lot of lifting and dropping of the engine hoist in tiny amounts and different angles to get them free because of the bellhousing dowels. Just take your time and be careful not to force anything so you don't damage the TQ convertor hub.
I am assuming you are leaving the transmission in the car.
