That probably has more to do with the springs than the shocks. The spring is what bears the load & they're probably spec'd for being used when the truck is around 8000 to 9000 pounds. That requires stiff springs, and having an adjustable shock probably isn't going to smooth things out much when driving empty.

Partly, but the way the suspension absorbs shocks and road imperfections is what I am describing. GM could also go to a coil spring in their 2500 lineup like Ram has.
