I hate to discourage your thought process but I rented 3 times before I bought. I wanted to give an SS and v-6 a thorough review before deciding how much coin I was willing to drop when I was ready.
I beat them all up, traction off sliding sideways, I wanted to see what I was getting into. Fast forward to post ownership and joining this forum... there is a legitimate break in process that no rental could possibly have properly completed so for that reason alone, I'm going to go with negative on purchasing a former rental.
I've learned that patience in finding exactly what you want in these situations will prevail. Once you decided on what you want, put some feelers out with some dealers, post on here and tell your friends, eventually you will find the car you want and at the deal that makes sense for your situation.
Good luck, it will definitely be worth the wait. These cars are awesome.
