Very common, but the cause has not been addressed until 2014. The reason for the rod bearing failures is mainly because few ever check their oil manually, and as most of these consume oil they run them out of oil. That will destroy any engine. No low oil indicator was implemented until the 2014 model year.


The other known issue is timing chain stretch and wear, and all GDI engine experience that due to the high concentration of raw fuel entering the crankcase and the nature of the abrasive particulate matter GDI engines shed. GM has improved the timing chain design to be more resistant to wear, but plenty of the LFX engines have it as well. There is a shop in FL that does the LFX engine transplant into the LLT cars for around $4500 complete with engine....
