The one thing I do like about a 12v cigarette lighter port vs a USB port or the cigarette style power port is that most always, the cigarette lighter puts out a higher amperage for charging phones and whatnot.
And they are usually wired hot directly to the battery instead of through the ignition so that even if the car is off, you still have power accessible without having to turn the key on.

Unfortunately with a port that has constant power if you leave something plugged in that remains on you can run the battery down. It happened on my Vue several times when my Mother in Law left her seat heater plugged in last winter.
