No first hand experience, but if the battery is OK and the problem is intermittent, the first place to look would be the clutch lockout switch that requires the clutch to be pressed before the starter will crank.
BTW, what do you mean "the whole thing is dead"? When you turn the key to start, exactly what happens and doesn't happen?
