^^^ that software update is important, my 2018 already had newer software and never exhibited this hard 1-2 shift problem, even before it was tuned.

As TP2SS says, whether a flush and a filter is enough depends on how long the trans was used after the shudder began, if the TCC clutch is worn too far, unfortunately OP's wife will need a new torque converter as well (loved the quick language lesson, too ). Let's hope the flush will be sufficient.
