Because you made it out of the skip shift "window" by the time you actually shifted.. I do it all the time just because I hate 1-4 shifting.

Will do. From what I have read here, the fix is to replace the "steering gear". I'm not sure what that includes since its all electric but the GM bulletin says to check the connection as they easily...
