Motor Trend Scoop: 2015 Camaro to be on Alpha Platform
As reported on Homepage Blog.

Motor Trend reported last month that the 2015 Camaro would use the same Alpha platform at the 2014 Cadillac CTS. This would create a lighter, smaller Camaro. The lighter weight would lend itself to having a supercharged or turbocharged V6 as the performance engine of choice for the Camaro SS. More information at these two links.

I was reading in the new Motor Trend that the 2015 Camaro could get the Alpha platform. This would be a smaller platform and may shed some weight. It was an interesting read - here is an article similar.

They've been saying that for decades. Smaller, lighter.

Looks like it would still have room for a V-8, so thats a plus.

I just read that article before jumping on here. I like where this is headed. It also said the next generation Camaro starts production in early 2014 as a 2015 model.

Inferno2SS 04-06-2010 10:25 AM

So does smaller and lighter mean the Camaro is going to be a 2 seater?

2010 SSRS 04-06-2010 10:32 AM

Keep the Camaro a V-8

:word: and this is unbiased ;)

i could be wrong but i thought i read that they are doing away with the v8 on the new platform...

because people were asking about why drop the power.. but the car will be much lighter... so it makes up for the lost hp power...

levi1922 04-06-2010 10:45 AM

I hope it comes out a little later than 2015MY. But that's for selfish reason that I will be fresh out of college at that point. But for GM, I think there's a lot to be gained by putting newer generations out a little sooner, or atleast heavy refreshenings. Ford has started this recently and I think it's working very well.

Remember they could very well go away from the good ol' pushrod V8's. You have CAFE standards that will be in place by 2016, so the top tier Camaro could very well be a turbo V6 of some sort.

If they can get the same power with better gas mileage out a V6 I say

I heard it's going to use nuclear fusion. They are just having problems with the flux capacitor. Good news is they called in Doc Brown.

no way a V6 is going to fly for a SS, however with the new CAFE restrictions for 2016 (, they might have no choice.

Gary B 04-06-2010 03:41 PM

THAT will be a bad ass car! Lite is RIGHT!!

Revo1 04-06-2010 03:42 PM

Bah. After that last Camaro/Challenger/Mustang comparison, my respect for Motor Trend went down the cr@pper...

Rollin Thunder 04-06-2010 04:18 PM

v-6 ss dont think so. Hopefully obama wont have control then though and the cafe rules can be de hippieized.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot 04-06-2010 04:24 PM

Id rock a v6 turbo Camaro. Did any of you guys ever hear a cammed GN before? As long as its a bigger displacement v6 it will still sound badass, especially when you hear it spool up. You have to adapt to survive, remember people hated messing with fuel injection when it first came out too.

Rollin Thunder 04-06-2010 04:26 PM

hey a turbo v-6 in an RS model, cool, in an SS no way. Just as bad as the hybrid corvette. How un cool is it to roll in silence to a stop light.

The_Blur 04-06-2010 04:28 PM

We didn't know this much about the Camaro in 2005. It is downright impossible for this information to be based on facts 5 years out.

brAnd7onX 04-06-2010 04:40 PM

Guys this explains the new CAFE laws...

n!ght r!der 04-06-2010 05:17 PM

If they put the camaro on alpha and they don't get rid of zeta, I want to see a chevelle based off the one in the early 70's.

I know it most likely won't happen, but if it looks close enough to a '69 or '70 it will win over the people that like the retro styling :iono:
