GM High Tech - CAI Testing

I wasn't sure if anyone posted this yet.

The intakes involved in the test were ADM Street, Advanced Flow Engineering, Airaid, Cold Air Inductions, Fastlane, Late Model Racecraft, New Era Peformance

It was a pretty good read. They tested IAT, rpm acceleration, rwhp, tq, etc.

But looking strickly at max HP and TQ numbers here are the results:

1. Cold Air Inductions -(409.66 rwhp, 408.32 rwtq)
2. Airraid -(405.55 rwhp, 407.36 rwtq)
3. Late Model Racecraft -(404.39 rwhp, 407.03 rwtq)
4. Fastlane - (401.22 rwhp, 398.11 rwtq)
5. New Era Performance - (398.18 rwhp, 402.39 rwtq)
6. Advanced Flow Engineering - (391 rwhp, 387 rwtq)
7. ADM Street - (389.77 rwhp, 399.09 rwtq)
8. Baseline stock intake - (393.37 rwhp, 395.45 rwtq)

In the acceleration test (3500 - 6500 rpm range) Fastlane was the fastest followed by the stock airbox.

Interesting... I google'd this with no success, do you have a link? This is the second test that has the CAI at the top... Also interesting that mid pack HP intakes were faster in acceleration???

The test is in the May 2010 Issue of GM High Tech Performance Magazine. Its a 10 page spread with a lot of information about each intake (intake pictures, easy of installation, fit and finish, etc).

The baseline stock is the highest stock dyno I've ever seen...am I missing something here?

I believe the test was done at AntiVenom in Tampa Fl. They must have a very generous dyno.

Yeah and the said the OTR (New Era) intake felt the fastest but was not.

Did the article say whether or not they did a tune to go with each CAI installation, or did they just add the CAI and run it on a dyno?

Oh man, here we go again...

So my question is the hp gain by a cai is just for sound and bragging rights that your car makes more hp but in general everyday driving your car will be slower? :iono:

Damn I thought I had my mind made up for the ADM but this makes me think.
I mean it got less then stock air box hp numbers whats up with that?

BabyHauler 03-28-2010 09:13 AM

Cold Air Incuctions won Jannettys tests and now GM high perf. Maybe they have something figured out down there.

Apex Motorsports 03-28-2010 09:17 AM

Hmmm. I need to read this article, because nothing about those numbers look right.

What doesn't look right?

No mention of tuning done for dyno numbers. They did try to downplay the dyno numbers saying "that there is no way to accurately replicate real-world conditions for intake testing." Basically because the dyno doesn't show any "ram air" properties of each design.
