ZL1 vs SS difference in performance
 
Considering the price difference will be about 20k
Between the ZL1 and the SS what would
U expect performance wise.
I am between ordering a 1ss with 8 speed
NPP and MRC
Just dont know how fast would the ZL1 have to
Be in your opinion to justify the uptick in price
For me the ZL1 auto would have to be 0-60 bellow 3.4
To pay the upcharge

If your only concern is straight-line speed buy the 1SS and supercharge it, as the ZL1 will be a complete performance package.

Get ready to pay the up charge then. The car will 0-60 well below 3.4.

I am more interested in overall performance
And dont want to mod
So if this car is way faster then the SS i will pay to play

I don't think it will run 0-60 below 3.4 but the A8 probably will run around 3.5.

The Z06 does 0-60 in 2.9 according to GM. 3.4 is definitely within reach. That would make the ZL1 17% slower to 60.

I think the performance of the ZL1 is going to blow everyone away (thinking very low 3's). I never once thought the corvette would do it in 2.9 and boom.

0-60 is traction limited for rwd cars with this kind of power, 1/4 mile trap speed is a much better indication of straight line performance.

My question is how much more HP is worth the upcharge. I mean when the ZL1 came out the reason everyone traded their SS for one wasn't the blower, it was the MRC, some interior upgrades, and that facia. But mostly it was the MRC that got the folks to trade instead of getting a turbo or SC and having more power for less money.

Well now you can order an SS with MRC for an extra $1600. So what would it really take to get you into a ZL1 now instead of ordering a $40k SS instead of a 60+ ZL1

Suspension tweaks, wheel/tire set up, 200hp+ easy modibility, MUCH improved looks, racing seats, prob some interior enhancements/suede, improved brakes, PDR,carbon fiber body panels.. I think there will be more. So the question should be what part of the car will stay untouched. I don't see how you could touch that for 20k especially with a warrantee and higher resale then a modded car. I like the SS. But there is no part of me that wants one. On the other hand the camo car with an LT4 has me checking this site hourly.

IMO, when folks traded up it was for the whole package from front splitter to dual mode exhaust, and not just the MRC. The MRC is just a very small part of what makes the ZL1 the beast it is. Everything about it is heavy duty, and is built to take abuse.

I don't think anyone can say for certain if they will trade up, until some actual details are released. I'm kinda looking forward to some new tech, and go fast parts.

Here's some thoughts from my perspective and maybe some stuff to consider. I drove my 2012 ZL1 M6 for about 3 years and have had a 2016 2SS A8 for a few weeks. I drove 500 miles with the 2012 ZL1 miles to pickup the 2016 2SS and then drove 500 miles back the same day with the new Camaro. Both were awesome in their own way and I wish I could have kept both.

My opinion on a 2017 ZL1 is based on what I learned and personal speculation that the 2017 ZL1 will have the LT4 and be built (overbuilt) in a similar manner to the 2012-2015 ZL1 fleet. Other than using DRs and slicks, my comments are based on the stock 2017 ZL1 I built in my head and from real world driving comparisons from the 2012 ZL1 and 2016 2SS.

- Consistent Power: Add 200hp to the 2016 Camaro, keep the weight about the same, use similar but wider GY stock tires, and an A8. I believe you will see 2017 ZL1s run 1.7 60ft times, 11.40s and 122mph all day long with a good driver. Good DA, a great track and an experienced driver will see my fantasy 2017 ZL1 run an occasional 1.6, 11.20 and 124mph. Stock tire 60ft times will be the limiting factor.

- Flexibility: Add DRs and skinnys for better bracket race consistency and you might get another tenth or two. Add some Hoosier slicks to take advantage of the additional power on the starting line and we'll probably see high tens. My fantasy ZL1 has a new heavy duty rear end so slicks should be fine with the A8 and traction control off.

- Reliability: The previous ZL1 fleet included a lot of heavy duty parts that were built to withstand both drag and track racing and let you change modes at the flick of a switch (button actually). I don't see a single purpose suspension (like the Z28) going into a new ZL1, but maybe an improved, more aggressive MRC. Superchargers hate heat and the 2016 Camaro seems like it's designed around the cooling system. The 2017 ZL1 will benefit from that and likely improve it a bit.

- Cool Factor: The supercharger is so much fun it's probably illegal in some conservative states. Adding 200hp and the supercharger kick and sound to the 2016 Camaro platform is going to be awesome.

- Uniqueness: Depends where you live, but you will rarely see another ZL1 on the road, at the track or at a local car show. Plenty at the CamaroFest, but not so much otherwise. If you never take it to the race track, it's still pretty cool to drive and it's usually the only one at the local car show.

- Awesomeness: CAI + Supercharger + Throttle = Involuntary Grin from the driver and interesting comments from the co-pilot

- Daily Driver and Confidence: Use the ZL1 as a daily driver, drive 300 miles, put on a helmet and take it out on the track (drag, road or autocross), drive it 300 miles home, and take it to work the next day. Unless you race it every weekend, you only need to replace the fluids (brake, oil, rear) and tires.

- Race Warranty: The warranty for the 2012-2015 ZL1s covered things that broke at the track but not stuff you run into. If the 2017 ZL1 gets the same warranty, then drive it, race it and don't worry about it.

- A8 vs M6: Depends on what you want to do with the car. The M6 is fun to drive on the street (Tail of the Dragon) and road course (Corvette Track). Not so much fun for autocross and no fun at all for drag racing. Unless you are very, very good, you have to use the traction control with the M6 at the drag strip and you will never be as fast or consistent as an A8 car. The A8 will work best if you want to do all three and you still get to play with the paddle shift or sport shift option if you are feeling feisty.
