A more racer friendly design

Is it possible that because the new Gen 6 will be designed in house and not adapted from some other platform, we'll see a more friendly body / chassis structure? Like an independent rear end that can be easily changed out, with something like an S60 Strange unit without $5000 in fab work. I'd also like to see a basic 5.3 HO engine with 340HP with a killer T56 TREMEC trans as an option. In a more basic stripped down affordable model, like we had in the 60s. A choice of 6 engines and 4 transmissions! I miss that. :thumb:

Don't bet on it. Those days are gone.

I wish that all the braking, tire, and handling technology that is on the Z/28 was just an option. It would make for a cool street/strip car.

Blame the government. Every powertrain option needs to be certified for each vehicle, and GM cannot spend the time or $ certifying 6 engines and 4 transmissions.

You're completely right. Each combination requires government-approved ratings for fuel economy and emissions.

Of course, several engines could be justified by marketing and profitability reports.

This is just imagination here. For the next generation, let's imagine a lineup:
  • LS—V6
  • LT—2.0L turbo with better torque curve or optional V6
  • SS—LT1 (6.2L V8) or optional twin turbo V6 with similar power
  • Z/28—LT2? (high-output LT1 with hot cam, different tune, shorty headers)
  • ZL1—LT4 (6.2L supercharged V8)

These are options we've discussed on the forum, and would compete nicely with Ford's offerings, including a turbo 4-banger and EcoBoost. That's 6 engines on 1 car all released in different phases of the next Camaro's lifecycle.

Dunno about more "racer-friendly", as you describe it......definitely need to look towards existing equipment...or variants of those parts. Not brand new things...

But I don't think there's a doubt in anyones mind that the car will be entirely developed to shock and awe in all sorts of racing events...consider: The same people that have built the SS, 1LE, ZL1, and Z/28 are working on this car.....AND....look at what they've done recently: COPO Camaro, Stingray, Z/28, ZL1, Z06....

...I can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves in the new car!

We have 5 engines, and 5 transmissions so I think we're doing pretty good, we can have 7 different engine and transmission combos, there are actually 7 transmissions if you count the three tr6060's that have different gear ratios (SS,1LE/Z/28,ZL1).

They are very close to offering what I'd like to see. They already offer different wheels and a 1LE package. I'd really, REALLY like to be able to order an SS with 1LE wheels or a set of 19" really wide wheels. An SS is hampered in SCCA street class (used to be called stock) by its narrow 20' wheels. The 1LE has slightly worse gearing for stock class but at least comes with wide wheels/tires.
I'd just like to be able to mix/match a few things, not much.
I really think with the current rules of 200treadwear coming for SCCA that a 1LE with the TR6060 ratios AND 3:91 gears and a set of 19" x 10 wheels would dominate. An SS would be competitive with a few minor changes, mostly wheel choices.
Just throwing that out there is anyone is listening.

Good Idea, I will pass the message along.

Thanks RTCAT,

I'd like to see the Camaro competitive. There are a bunch of them out there on the roads and in garages but very very few show up at these events. The mustangs are dominating FS at nationals. I really think this is mostly due to the tires and wheels. Big heavy 20" but narrow wheels and very few tire choices in that diameter.
There's a little more to it than that but the guys at GM can figure gearing out just fine.
