Kooks/Gesi Green Cats going bad... again...

Welp, I’ve been inspecting my green cats every so often with my borascope down the o2 sensor hole. After my first set failed before my engine mods I didn’t want to take any chances, that was around 660rwhp.

Inspected them a few weeks ago and started to notice a bit of collapsing on both cats. Inspected them again today, it’s about the same.

I just don’t think they can really handle the power/boost that they say they can.

First 2 pics are the new shots via borascope, last pic is from the first set (passenger side) that I replaced in March.

Moral of the story, just because you think don’t have issues and they are fine doesn’t mean you actually “don’t have issues”. Inspect them, esp if your over 700rwhp.

Just a note: Last pic may have been an actual failure, as it only happened on passenger side. Drivers side was ok.

What is your target lambda at WOT? How much timing?

gtfoxy 05-24-2021 08:28 PM

That’s a neat camera deal.

Details?

Don't have a wideband connected, timing is 18 degrees. Was tuned by Andrew at CSP, was gone over completely again after cam/heads were done. It's not the tune. Its pushing almost 1k flywheel. These cats are rated at 850 hp (thats not per bank) Its 425hp per bank, and Kooks says that's flywheel not wheel. i Havent data logged it since ive put the cam in it.

Got this guy... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Good for inspection in cylinders, valves etc. Or anywhere it fits :)

I remember reading while the C7 ZR1 was in development that there were a lot of thermal issues they had to deal with. I wonder if this is one of those kind of issues.

Maybe the size of the cat is the problem. If they put bigger cats' on, there would be more surface area and it wouldn't restrict as much. I wouldn't know.

Do you need the cats for inspection reasons for your state?

KingLT1 05-25-2021 08:53 AM

This is why I cringe every time I see somebody post they went with Long tube headers and "Green" cats on a boost car. There is a cat out there on the market (G power Ultra rated @ 1700hp) but they cost around 950.00. I believe CSP offers them with their Header package.

They plug in, not sure if they do visual inspection anymore here. But also the smell of raw gas gets to you after awhile too which is why the cats went on.

This is what they sell with their header package, unless there's a secret they didn't tell me :)

This does sound logical tbh.. It doesn't seem like its a melting/heat issue. It seems its the exhaust pressure putting strain on the cells and bending them inwards/outwards or whichever way they want to go.

HJS Cats will take the abuse but they are extremely expensive.
