Design Contest for 6th Gen

What do you guys think of a design contest for the 6th gen since so many people voiced strong feelings about the refresh?

KMPrenger 05-23-2013 03:31 PM

I actually really like this idea.

I think the content should come from regular people you and me, or from students in automotive design, or really anyone except those affiliated with the final design with GM.

Why do I think that? A few reasons. 1) So GM can't really influence us in any way with their design. 2) I highly doubt GM would give us designs to vote on that actually end up looking like the real deal, unless they don't care to keep the design under wraps like car companies normally do.

I think the best way to go about this would be a rating system, so we can rate on a scale like 1 - 10, instead of only one design getting my vote. But honestly, I'd take whatever method we get.

Only problem I see with this, is that as ethusiasts, we may be overly biased against designs we are familiar with, rather than new or futuristic designs, but thats just a maybe. It may not be a big deal at all.

I also wonder if we aren't a bit late in the game for this, as I'm betting by now GM has some close to final designs under wraps, assuming the next gen will be a 2016.

warren3537 05-23-2013 03:48 PM

I also think that some of the designs should incorperate some ideas about where to place certain things of the internals "ie" heater core, to where a simple fix should not be taking out major items to replace a 20 dollar part that will cost you over a thousand dollars.

That'd be great, but I don't think that is the purpose here. But I hear you!

BaylorCamaro 05-23-2013 04:16 PM

Sounds good!

Doc 05-24-2013 12:42 AM

If anybody has any design ideas feel free to pop them in here. Might be interesting to see what people come up with.

Taintedveins 05-24-2013 04:34 AM

They already did one?

Apex Motorsports 05-24-2013 05:33 AM

If I remember correctly the 5th Gen was the result of an internal GM design contest. All departments world wide were eligible to submit designs.

1camaro70 05-24-2013 07:26 AM

I would bet that the final design is over 95% set, and will not change at this point.

2010SLVRBULIT 05-24-2013 07:59 AM

..like anyone from GM is going to listen:pout:

meissen 05-24-2013 08:46 AM

It'd be fun to see regardless of whether or not the design goes anywhere. I think it's a fun idea.

90503 05-24-2013 09:28 AM

I'd say good idea...but perhaps an exercise in futility as far as what it will actually look like....Perhaps the contest winner would be based on who's design comes closest, but I think it's a little late in the game....Don't think they'd be changing platforms and announcing what model year ('16) it would be built unless they already had the car designed already...

But to that end...my favorite so far is a pic I saw of the next Barracuda...lol...
It looked like a blend of Corvette and 5thGen Camaro...I loved that look...can't find it, but it was a blue car...looked awesome...

No

But theres potential. If done right I'd rock it.

jcamere94z28 05-24-2013 02:00 PM

The next generation is probably more underway than just drawing stages...

Yeah but it doesn't mean they don't listen to feedback. And even if they fall short on the first design, bad sales would motivate them to do a refresh real quick so there's still some value in submitting ideas I would think. The mechanicals are probably already set. I'm guessing body styling and interior design could still be changed at this stage.

I'd love this idea. There are plenty of bright artists on this forum and with collective ideas I'm sure GM would listen. It's all about initiative. Don't wait for GM to ask, just have to do it. I'm sure GM has concepts and things of that nature but it doesn't hurt for them to maybe grab a few ideas from a lucky member on this forum.

I agree. I'm sure they have exterior and interior design in the middle to late stages already, but I'm sure they can and still will be making changes and tweaks.

I hope they do a good job with the 6thGen...but I'm prepared and looking forward to a totally new look for the car...It's gonna be different, imo, waaay different from what we're used to, including the '14 re-fresh...

Gibroni 05-24-2013 09:26 PM

It's going to be based on the next gen Volt.

To replace my HUD light bulb...would have cost $2000

I like this too.

To me, lower part of the bumper needs work although the lower leds look cool. Upper grille and headlights are sweet.

Hood may need more character. I hate a flat hood on a muscle car.

Rear end is chopped too much. Add a little length back there and add a nice rear spoiler which all muscle cars should have and you have got yourself something here.

toehead93 05-26-2013 08:58 PM

Yeah, that is a great start! I wonder how difficult those headlights would be to make?

I agree with this. Also they should make the rear rounded on the top like a '67 as a base. RS and SS (though Im unsure as to "SS" on a 6th gen with the Chevy SS coming out) would have spoilers to compliment the car as well as make it more appealing. I would prefer some type of rounded headlights over pointed . The door panels are too curvy. Its a start, now it needs some refining.

chef-beavis 05-29-2013 04:17 PM

I think this would be a great excersize just so some of the forum members can see what it feels like to have your idea of perfection sujected to open forum criticism. Some of our members are really, really hard on the designers that help shape what we get. Opinions are subjective and everyone has their own agenda and priorities.

My favorite genral vague comment on here is, "The ______ (insert part of Camaro here) needs to be completely redone because they way it is completely sucks. C'mon. Get real. I rode in my buddy's Mustang last wekend and blah, blah, blah."

I've always thought, "Great. Sketch up you ideas and show us something better."

I suspect we will find out a reason most of us are carpenters, doctors, bean counters, etc. Designing things with common aestetic appeal and functionality is not easy.

GM probably listens to their customers more than any car company, esp when it comes to the Camaro.

I'm going to call it like it is, it's probably too late for any contest

LSXaddict 06-01-2013 02:03 PM

It is a cool idea and would be fun to see everyones ideas but I am 99.9% sure the 6th Gen is already for the most part full designed and it isn't I wouldn't want a car GM only spent two years on!

Doc 06-01-2013 02:12 PM

Well we're only talking about the body design; if somebody comes up with a great body style design I don't see why they might not be interested in seeing it.

I understand you're only talking body design but I beleive that has been locked down already.

Edit: Regardless though I would like to see what people come up with.

The refresh should've looked something like this I think.

Boricua 06-27-2013 12:20 AM

I like that design, I hope the 6th Gen improve on the 5 th Gen design. I would love to see our body style in that smaller body. But we will see what GM does.

I do like the tail lights on that rendering. I could see something like that going on the next gen (or as you said, being part of the 2014 refresh).

Actually, I think overall I do like it. Not perfect but looks great. Looks like a possibility for a smaller 5th gen. I actually think the wheels are just OK....not a big fan of them but its just a rendering so no worries :)
