First 2016 Chevy Camaro (6th Gen) Prototype Spied!

34 Attachment(s)
In 2008, there was no bigger story in the automotive world than the upcoming, fifth-generation Camaro. It's now time to restart that hype machine as we've just caught the sixth-generation, 2016 Camaro for the first time!

Normally we'd expect to catch a regular Camaro, or maybe a Camaro SS, first since it's still early in the development cycle. Surprisingly, we may have caught a high performance Camaro variant!

In addition to the quad tip exhaust outlets, and the large, sporty double-spoke wheels, we can see what look to be vents showing though the camouflage on either side of the hood, and trunk lid spoiler pushing up the camo in back. Are we looking at the next gen ZL1 or 1LE potentially?

This may indicate a faster rollout of Camaro variants, much like GM has done with the new Corvette, and Corvette Z06.

Overall, we'd say the new Camaro looks a little more aggressive, and muscular. One of the first things we noticed is that the roof looks a bit lower than the current model. Glancing towards the rear, it appears as though the trunk lid is shorter, as is the section between the door and the rear wheels. The rear end may also have a more rounded shape.

The front wheels also look as though they may be pushed out further towards the front of the car.

Additionally, GM has gone to great length to camouflage the rear roofline on this car, though the real rear windshield, and its slope, isn't that hard to see through the clear plastic camouflage.

Codenamed "A1BC," the 2016 Chevy Camaro will be all-new underneath as it ditches the Zeta chassis in favor of the newer, lighter Alpha chassis. The Alpha chassis is, of course, the platform already in use on the Cadillac ATS and CTS. As a result, the 2016 Camaro is expected to be both lighter and smaller than the current 5th gen Camaro.

The usual lineup of six, and eight, cylinder engines should be expected, with some of those engines featuring forced induction. GM's turbocharged, 2.0L four-cylinder may also serve as the base engine this time around.

Look for the new Camaro to begin production in October of 2015 at the Lansing Grand River assembly plant.

Sweet.

Not sure how I feel about the taillights.

FenwickHockey65 07-17-2014 01:08 PM

Looks fairly evolutionary but you really can't tell anything.

Overflow 07-17-2014 01:09 PM

... So when's Camaro6.com opening?

oustaz 07-17-2014 01:09 PM

We want big headlights like the ones on 2010-2013, I am not sure about this rear end.....

PoorMansCamaro 07-17-2014 01:10 PM

tran, might want to change that to 2016

Obzen 07-17-2014 01:10 PM

Looks like it's got a big round ass now.

GroundhogSS 07-17-2014 01:11 PM

Wow, finally we see some pics. Thanks for posting. Hard to tell but the roof still looks very low. Otherwise, looks pretty good, what we can see in these photos.

FenwickHockey65 07-17-2014 01:11 PM

Don't draw any conclusions from that rear end. You can pack a crapload of styrofoam and cardboard back there to throw people off.

GoldCartridgeGamer 07-17-2014 01:12 PM

Kind of excited. Does look like an evolution of the current body style too. The front end looks like a ZL1 style front fascia too.

GoldCartridgeGamer 07-17-2014 01:12 PM

These were taken with a drone I assume?

Bhobbs 07-17-2014 01:13 PM

This looks like a pretty advanced prototype to me. I was expecting to see mules running around. Hopefully that means a January reveal and summer to fall 2015 release is going to happen.

Obzen 07-17-2014 01:14 PM

Not sure how I feel about the finish. Will they have a car cover delete option? Seems like that would be noisy. I prefer paint.

white ZL1 07-17-2014 01:14 PM

My eyes see a potentially smaller 5th gen. Interesting to see more as the camo comes off.

102SS 07-17-2014 01:17 PM

How much will that body wrap option cost;)

That's what I'm laughing at. The people saying " I don't like the rear. " You can even see anything!

I've heard from someone deeply involved with GM news that it'll be revealed in Detriot next January.

I said I didn't like the rear as a joke.

Look forward to January. This is the first time I am actually following a car from the beginning so this should be fun.

RubberChicken 07-17-2014 01:21 PM

Can't make out much except the twin vents on the hood. Guess we will have to keep waiting!

IMJ 07-17-2014 01:22 PM

You could maybe run the pictures through a filter and create negatives and an embossed photo to bring out the lines more and lessen the covering details. We'd probably get a sharper picture off the lines of the car that way?

Right, look and the front end too. Looks like its bulging out, it also looks like a modified bumper of the current gen stuck on. That would go along with the trend GM is using lately of using non production prototype bumpers, grilles and hoods on the test mules.

sonnydurden 07-17-2014 01:25 PM

Looks like there might be some nice hood vents!!

invaderzim 07-17-2014 01:25 PM

They pack a lot of crap under the wraps to throw people off. Based on that I'm thinking this is going to be a smaller more "sporty" less "muscle" evolution from the current model. Meaning more modern less retro. Just my 2 pennies

Forte 07-17-2014 01:25 PM

Awesome! I mean, can't really tell anything but it's great because this means we will likely slowly see more and more "spied" pictures like this. Very excited to see what my (likely) next car will look like!

well, I guess the site is not an affiliate of camaro5, so I won't post the site with spaces, but it's the same as camaro6.com, except it has a g in it. lol

FenwickHockey65 07-17-2014 01:29 PM

Impala is about 201 inches long. Current 5th gen is 190 inches.

HTWLSS 07-17-2014 01:31 PM

lbls1 07-17-2014 01:31 PM

The car looks like its getting bigger. Its too early to predict a hit, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

khell86 07-17-2014 01:32 PM

I will say that GM comes out with some cool rim designs lol. Those look sweet. I know its hard to tell for sure, but it looks like the wheelbase stayed the same in regards to the impala its next to.

RubberChicken 07-17-2014 01:34 PM

Announcing at the Detroit Auto Show makes sense. Geez, it's only July!??? It's gonna be a long 6 months...

yea that's what I was thinking... ZL1 front looking. Also looks to me like there are scoops/louvers on both sides of the hood instead of the current SS center heat extractor.

Awesome news! Thanks Tran:headbang: Looks damn small to me.

Keep in mind that they use old front clips when doing early testing.

Ford is using the old Raptor front for the 2016 Raptor during testing, looks nothing like their next platform.

Most likely this was an internal component test. Suspension, Engine, something, so they threw a front clip on and sent it out the door.

benji276289 07-17-2014 01:38 PM

Nice exhausts!

hrpiii 07-17-2014 01:42 PM

some with love it, some will hate it, some won't care. But it's always exciting to see something new and shiny. I am not agreeing with their choice of clearbra, need more "clear". :D

Cincy10SSRS 07-17-2014 01:43 PM

Looks like it may have variants of Steve Hines's hex vents, moved out and forward. Love my vents. Steve should get some kind of royalty or something. :thumb:

yougojay 07-17-2014 01:46 PM

I'm Excited...!
