Whats the point of the clutch pedal spring?

Just curious because I have gotten a ton of different answers.
What is the point of the spring attached to the clutch pedal?
I know its a return spring but is that the only purpose?
I took mine out because I couldn't stand the rubber band feel of the clutch.
Taking it out made driving much more enjoyable but if its actually serving a purpose other than just being a return spring I'll put it back in.

If nothing else, it'll keep any clutch position switches from changing state. I doubt that it'd allow the engine to be started without pushing the clutch down with your foot, but I suppose cruise control behavior might be affected (be suddenly tripped off for no apparent reason). It's possible for the pedal weight or inertial movements to cause small hydraulic pressures to show up on the throwout bearing all or much of the time.

Maybe replacing with a softer spring would be a better fix than none at all.

I've gotten answers as far as its just a return spring, it helps the driver hold the clutch down in traffic, and as far as the spring makes sure the pedal returns all the way to the top for a compensation port in the slave cylinder. Then there's a ton of guys like myself that just take the thing out. If I'm running in the quarter I'll probably pop it back in there so there's no clutch issues because I heard it gets pretty hot.
