Loud Squeaking/Scraping Sound from Rear End?
 

Earlier today I noticed a squeaking metal-on-metal sound coming from the rear of the car. It happens at all speeds and seems to be linked to wheel rotation. It occurs regardless of the brakes being applied or not. Volume is not consistent but it's audible even with the windows up.

Car is a 1SS with 2,200 miles with aftermarket wheels and an exhaust, no other mods. Any ideas before I make an appointment to take it in?

I am about to buy a 2016 Camaro 1SS and I noticed on the Carfax that the car was brought in a bunch of times where the dealer checked the rear differential and axle which concerns me. I didn't notice anything during my test drive but that doesn't mean anything. So what is the "Normal Bad Issue"? How can I check if the car has a problem with the rear diff?

Have differential fluid changed and get dealership to pay for it. I did by threatening the survey when they told me no. I did it 6 months ago and it completely fixed it. I drove it 8 months with that noise and feeling. Even if they say its normal its not right. It can and should be fixed with thefluid change. It'll clear out metal shavings in it that are causing the grind. I credit this forums users for the advice back then and i appreciate you all. We are all a family

You say you have aftermarket wheels....correct backspace and offset??? what size tires did you put on?? If the tires are taller and wider than stock you're probably gonna have to relocate a wiring connector behind the rear fender liner (driver side). There's several threads on the subject.

Thanks for the responses. The noise went away yesterday, but if it comes back I'll have the dealer change the differential fluid since that seems to be a common problem based on everything I've been reading.

Wheels and tires should be OK as I have the MRR 1LE replicas that a lot of people are running - I did check my wiring harness again and still no rubbing.

I have the same problem and it does sound like metal-on-metal grinding, and its so damn loud and embarrassing. Happens when accelerating past 1200 rpms.

Isn't this the positraction clutches that after a few turns they get fresh gear oil in between them and quiet down?

Turns out the problem I had was an exhaust issue. Theres a bolt on the underside of the resonator and there was a crack there that somehow resonated along with exhaust once it gets up to a certain temp.

Yes its a normal sound real positracks with clutches makes .. No real fix for it.. Other than Whale oil additive ( no longer available ) the synthetic oils just cant get rid of the noise ... nothing wrong with the Positrack otherwise

what happens is the oil drains out of the clutches when its sits.. ( like over night ).. so the first few turns you make the clutches chatter then once you have driven enough and made a few turns in both directions .. sound should diminish because they got some oil in the clutch packs...

When to worry: when it "stops" making that sound .. time for new posi clutches... I know... now your all going to have a panic attacks about not having the sound...... :confused0068:

On a less humorous note. DON'T Worry the clutches will last a long time!!!! :thumbup: .....unless you do Idiot burnouts all the time... then nothing can help you .. "stupid is as stupid does" so don't be stupid.... Leave the burn-outs for Funny Car drivers. they are a waist on anything less :bonk:
