Enthusiast/Owner survey...

I received a few surveys in the mail after I bought my car...and I noticed something peculiar...in a day in age when we're adding feature after feature to the cars (which can add weight and cost)...they only ever asked for what features I had, or what else I wanted on the car.

Never what I didn't want.

This is different from "name one thing you hate", or "what's the worst feature on your car". And I'm not advocating for stripped shells of a car, either...

...I'm curious only...is there anything about our 5th-gen Camaros that we just don't need/use? Barring legal requirements for things like airbags, fuel economy, and crash tests...

In my case, after thinking about it for a little bit - I found that I never use that little lock button in the middle of the cabin, I don't use the sun-visors, and I rarely look at the auxiliary gauges down in the console, or adjust the head-rests. Also...I never needed more glass: I LIKE the chopped roof feel. Little things....;)

What about you?

CooG 01-16-2013 03:15 PM

Back seats.

I wish my back seat area was more like the Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca. Just a carpeted area to maybe toss a small piece of luggage or briefcase.

scubadoo7 01-16-2013 03:18 PM

Hands down, it's "hill assist"

Spektrum 01-16-2013 04:03 PM

I'd say the placement and usability of the cup holders.

Char1ieone 01-16-2013 05:23 PM

I myself personally love the locking button in the center. It's different from all of the other cars out there. As for the thing I don't like/believe we need, it would have to be the Home Link garage door buttons on upper console. Out of curiosity, who actually has it, yet alone knows, that it's even there?

I like this topic...

The things that everyone could live without (imo)...
  • The power jack next to the traction control button...
  • The engine "cosmetic" cover.. useless weight and heat trap
  • The compressor/goo in the trunk and the foam spare replacement it mounts in. Mine is even a daily driver, but without a spare you are on roadside/tow only.. why cost yourself 2X the money by getting a 'temp' fix
  • Onstar, the most useless (and expensive) option on any car... EVER
  • Serius XM radio, who doesn't have a smart phone that can stream google play/pandora/ect..
  • The central lock (even door mounted) switches, if you want to open the door pull the handle twice or wait till the ignition is off (I have mine set to unlock on turnoff)

The stupid (sometimes small) things that it SHOULD have come with...
  • Magnetic oil drain plug...
  • Nav/touchscreen/backup camera/ media center
  • Homelink/garage door opener
  • Steering wheel radio controls
  • Locking gas door

The small (sometimes) things that I'm GLAD it came with (that should be standard on every car)...
  • Auto-head lights
  • Locking Glove box
  • power to everything after ignition off (roll up windows/ listen to the last 20 seconds of a song/radio dj)

meissen 01-17-2013 09:46 AM

They will never do away with OnStar - and I'm glad that I have it in my vehicle.
Likewise they won't do away with Sirius, and I'm glad that they have it because I use Sirius XM every day.

They (now) already come with a touchscreen / backup camera / media center, homelink/garage door opener, steering wheel radio controls.

I enjoy my Sirius from time to time, and with OnStar, it does help give me peice of mind that I have it on. A friend of mine out in Albuquerque has his Chevy Pickup stolen, called up OnStar immediately and they were able to track down the vehicle and notified the authorities. The guy whole stole it was caught red handed and the officers took him to jail.

I would ike to add that the sun visors are pretty much useless as well.

I took a tour of the OnStar Command Center here in downtown Detroit - it's a very cool setup with a massive screen of the US and an icon appears anytime someone presses the OnStar button or it detects a vehicle accident. It's really humbling, though, when you're standing there watching the screen and you see an icon for an accident pop up and you know the accident was bad enough that it triggered OnStar... You hope they're alright and atleast know an advisor is going to be patched through to see if they need any help, but it's weird seeing it pop up and know someone's day just got ruined. Likewise they said that sometimes they can be the first to know when a major disaster occurs because of all the OnStar modules reacting to accidents (like when a bridge collapses). It's pretty crazy to think how useful that little blue button can be afterall!

CooG 01-17-2013 01:45 PM

OnStar is great! I'm embarrassed say that I have locked my keys in my truck at car shows 3 TIMES! Quick call to OnStar and the doors are opened and keys are out.

As for the cost, it can be covered a deduction that most insurance companies give you for having a way to track a stolen car. I have the Safe & Sound package and it costs me about $15/month. I also just bought 300 minutes of OnStar phone time for $9.99. This is great for when you are in an area where you lose your cellphone signal or your phone is dead.

Mr. Wyndham 01-17-2013 01:46 PM

Liking some of what's been said.

Just to clarify...this thread is for things you have on YOUR car, that you might not use very often. Consider this the customer satisfaction survey question that was never asked.

I'm not looking for clever engineering solutions or suggestions about improvements to models you don't own or drive.

myold88 01-17-2013 02:00 PM

The only thing I dislike and didn't need when I got my SS was the summer only tires.
I believe those should have been an option, not standard.
So many of us have had to purchase all season tires to drive the car in low temperatures.

I use that power jack by the traction control ALL THE TIME. Just goes to show that what some people don't want, others use constantly.

I just wish OnStar was an option. I don't ever use and never will.

patternpilot 01-17-2013 04:14 PM

I like all the things my 2012 has, I'm a gadget guy.

What I don't use and could be deleted, Center door lock switch, On star and skip shift. I use everything else and want more.

Sun visor, center lock button and skip shift.

I wish the mail slot was real and the paint did not fly off when a pebble looks at it (There are ways to use real petroleum based paints in this century).

What I don't like is that i have fog lights that are'nt really fog lights. Supposedly they are the day time running lights, but theres no way to turn them on at night when conditions are poor. WTF??????????? Is there a way to fix that so i can manually turn them on at night?

That reminds me....

I don't want any "faux" Ambient lighting on the dashboard.

No approvals necessary...the pictures might have been too big, physically, or in file size. Make sure they meet those limits, and try again.

You were probably stationed by the river, if I'm remembering where the base is, correctly...I'm in the suburbs of the city...south a ways...but Buffalo is the closest city I could name.

Yeah, it was at the mouth of the Buffalo River. I'm from Elmira, NY originally.

The worst thing in my SS is the stupid small sun visors. The few times i tried to use it i wasted time trying to adjust it only finding out that no matter how much i tried to adjust / angle it i had to flip it back up because it did absolutely nothing!

Really wish i had an actual spare tire instead of a compressor with some slime crap to inject into the flat tire if it won't hold air on it's own. I can just see the tire repair shop getting pissed as he has that slime crap going all over the place.

Skip shift was a problem until i got a skip shift eliminator.

Wish they had a better shifter for the 6-speed. It was notchy as hell and hard to shift at times. After switching the stock shifter to a MGW shifter, switching out the trans fluid for synthetic and then finally switching out the clutch master cylinder with Ideal G garage's modified clutch master cylinder it works great now but it did cost me time and money to get right.

90503 01-20-2013 11:34 AM

I agree the montra seems to be more, more, more of whatever...I sort of remember the thread for the Camaro Disciples who wanted input...All they wanted to hear was what "more" do you want (but keep in mind price and weight)...lol...All the suggestions for what not to put on the cars in the future were dismissed out of hand...

Without getting into detailed items, I believe the customer should be given a much lengthier option list (including On-Star and the obnoxious, aggravating and never-ending brow-beating everyone who wants to discontinue XM Radio gets)...

Until the factory lets you pick and choose what you want and don't want in your build to be, the "problem" of unwanted and unused features will never be resolved...my $.02...

OldScoolCamaro 02-01-2013 04:11 PM

...the console is too tall, <because of the tunnel there was no way around that however> the console glove box is too small for anything practical, the cup holders are also impractical...so I think that assembly could be 86'ed...the console guage package could also be eliminated, sun visors I would want to keep.

2012-1822 04-28-2013 04:51 AM

Non smoker here, but I'd like an ashtray to put change in, one that closes up for racing. I did pay for the Onstar after my trial period. One reason, to keep me from literally crying the day I walk outside and my car isn't there. First call to Onstar, second call to Steve the cop, buddy of mine and Camaro enthusiast. No skip shift, but it's not that bad either on a ZL1 or because of how I drive. No middle lock button. I do like the XM enough to pay for it. I'd be pissed if I had hill assist.

I mean other than being heavy I really like how my car is set up. Just that I wish Recaros had been available in 2012. Oh, and ZL1's need fender flares like the Z/28 will have, my paint is shredded, so yeah, with those gills and the wide hips on ole bertha, GM could have put a decent coat of paint on it to keep it from having 1000's of chips per side.

I don't know what it looks like without back seats, I'm going to find out, but an official carpeted rear seat delete option would be awesome. Love my steering wheel controls and the micro fiber on the wheel, but hate the center, wish it was retro like the 2010's. Bigger sun visors for sure.

That's about my take on not really answering the question, I find the car to almost be perfect considering the middle lock button and 4 gauge cluster that I don't use any of don't bother me because I don't look down while I'm driving. For that matter with the HUD, all the gauges could go away, I don't look at them, just the fuel mileage countdown and tire pressure is usually it, maybe oil life.

MYDLIFECRISIS 04-28-2013 05:44 AM

I just wish OnStar was an option. I don't ever use and never will.

It is an option...just don't pay for it!

Chuckster 05-08-2013 05:38 PM

My 2LT came with Homelink and backup camera. I hope to never buy another car that doesn't have these options. I find the sun visors useful on occasion but do wish they were larger. I avoided the RS package because I wanted all tires the same size so they could be rotated. How long does a Pirelli tire last that doesn't get a rotation? The center door lock was the only door lock originally. I think when they added the arm rest door locks they just didn't remove the center one, for what ever reason. I've also become a huge fan of heated seats. Funny I used to think that this was a stupid option on any car.

Jrichards73 05-08-2013 06:24 PM

Haters, my car came with a lot of haters.... can I get less haters?

mr02Z/28 05-08-2013 07:04 PM

I love my '13 2LT !!!!!!!

nsane 05-09-2013 06:31 AM

I love the looks of the 4-pack guages, but I rarely look at them. I have a 2011 2SS/RS and I like the simplicity of the stereo.

The can't really think of one thing I would rather not have. Chevy hit a home run on these cars!

Never what I didn't want.

What about you?

I actively do not want anything that is operated via a touch screen or menu. In any car. Don't even want the screen as I have no use for it.

Really, really don't want Hill Assist. I'd even pay extra to be able to turn it off by default as can be done in Fords and Dodges.

No use here for Mylink or any other method of phone integration or connectivity, Sirius, OnStar, or daytime running lights.
