MY HOW THE TIMES HAVE CHANGED

Im reading all these posts across the boards about putting the ZL1 1LE's high wing spoiler on other models of the Gen6 Camaro. It made me think of way back in 2009 when GM offered a high wing spoiler for the Gen5 and most people called it ricer and made fun of anyone that dare say they wanted one. Fast forward to 2018. GM puts one on the fastest Camaro ever to be produced and now they are cool with everyone wanting one. GM just made ricer cool. :headbang:

The 5th gen high wing looked like total ebay garage though. Just looks like an after thought that doesn't flow with the body lines at all.Attachment 910482

But in the ZL1-1LE it serves an aerodynamic purpose on the race course.

I understand that it was more for a "look" than function, but it was basically just a pedestal spoiler that was a little higher. Not much different from what the SS has now. It just goes to show how protective they were of keeping the Gen5 retro. The spoiler alone shows the direction change that GM was heading for with this new car.

I get that, and I think it also looks good on the Gen6. It's also still a high wing spoiler that most people hated to see on the Camaro. GM transformed people's opion of what is cool by putting it on the best car, and saying it makes 350lbs of downforce at 150mph. Now all of the sudden high wing spoilers are cool. They even made fun of the one that was set up for racing with an higher spoiler like the current one. Nice to see people opening their mines. It is crazy how easily humans can be manipulated though.

The real funny thing is that they were never ricer. They always came out of races. Anyone remember the king of the highwing spoilers? They came in a kick Chevy and Ford butt until NASCAR had to outlaw them.

The wing is not what makes the ZL1 1LE cool.

No but, the 1Le is what makes the wing cool though. That is my entire point.

To each his own, that high wing still looks ricer to me, but I am old. And then again I dont drive 150MPH either.

I felt like that with the superbird. I didnt care how many races it one. It was one ugly car. I always thought, what a great way to screw up a Roadrunner.

Ricer is putting on one that actually slows a car down and serves no purpose other than looks. The ZL1 1LEs is neither. As for putting it on other cars, only if it serves an actual performance function.

The spoiler does actually slow the car down by design.

Yes but it can actually do more than 150mph to actually need the downforce. A 180hp Civic on the other hand can't. Same as a car that will never see an actual track where you actually need downforce.
