Conversation: What made you choose Camaro over the competition?
 

Hey everyone, after road-testing all 3 top muscle car brands (Camaro, Mustang, Dodge) I never had a doubt in my mind that the Camaro will be my first V8/Sports car. I ordered MY22/re-order MY23 2SS Rapid Blue.



The Camaro's style, quality of interior and technology is incomparable (at least for me); but I don't understand what are people seeing in the other cars (Mustang, Dodge) that have made those sale numbers so poor for Chevy.


What made you choose your Camaro over lets say a Mustang or Dodge?



And why do you think people in general are preferring the competition?

My first car was an 88 IROC-Z with the 5.7L. I’ve owned 5 more since my first, including my current Hot Wheels 50th. I’ve considered both the Mustang and Challenger at times, and almost bought a 2012 or 2013 Boss 302 Mustang, but I stayed true to my Camaro love. lol

For me, it’s the best bang for the buck. It’s the best looking. It’s the best all around performer. It has the best interior. It’s more rare on the road these days, than it’s competition.

The reasons it sells the least: ZERO advertising over the last 5 years. A bit pricier than the competition. Less deals and rebates. Tougher to daily drive, if it’s not just the weekend toy.

Truthfully, all I had was a Chevy, and all I drove were v8'S.

I think of Chevy like Comcast. Great service reliability, if you can handle their terrible support demeanor. I've never met a Chevy Dealer I liked to be blunt. I guess it would be different if I walked in with a bag of cash.

But, that said, I have to admit I almost bought a charger over the Camaro the second time. The only 2 real complaints I have about the Camaro, poor passenger side visibility, and the seats do not lean back far enough for my liking. I'm used to it now though.

To answer your question though:

1. Charger/Challenger more room

2. Mustang - Easier and Cheaper to upgrade than Camaros - Parts more readily available

3. Ford and Dodge do what GM/Chevy has never done. Build a #1 car in its category. For example: Hellcat/Demon vs ZL1 GT500 vs ZL1. The only thing a ZL1 does better is turn and that's only if it is the ZLE. Everything else it falls behind. Even Corvettes are a joke, they are lower hp but lighter weight, so they obviously turn better, but are not always top tier in everything else either, again cost to mod is expensive as well.

5. Sure we can talk about the ZR1 but even at that level, their are superior options I believe.

That said, the only thing Chevy has done that makes Camaro more appealing is the cost of what you get. Generally cheaper than the competition until you go to mod it.

The Mustang GT500 was a closer consideration for me than the Dodge. What turned me off about the Mustang is how much more dealers were asking over MSRP and the fact that it had such a small gas tank. Add to the fact that you cannot get it with a manual transmission, and that was that.

The Redeye/Hellcat was also marked up to crazy amounts over MSRP and only had better HP numbers to speak of, which don't necessarily translate to better complete performance. Sure there is also better visibility, but I just need to see what's in front of me.

If I needed the car to be a daily driver (which would have me questioning a manual transmission) then that might make me reconsider. But considering this may be the last ICE that I buy, I didn't buy it as a daily driver but as an engaging driver's car whose days are numbered.

That fact that the warranty covered track use, plus it is the best handling of the 3

Have always been a Chevy guy, but truthfully "too me" the Camaro is by far the best looking of them.

Styling, inside and out, performance, and it's a Chevy! Always been a GM guy. I've wanted a Camaro ever since 3rd gen but the stars did not align until 2018, when I got my RS with a deal I could not refuse: $4K off MSRP including employer discounts and .9% financing for 5 years.

The Charger/Mustang interiors are too retro for my taste, and so is the 5th gen Camaro interior. If I want modern retro, I'll get a restomod.

And you almost never see a woman driving a Camaro in any trim. Not that there's anything wrong with female Camaro drivers, but some cars just have a testosterone vibe. The Camaro does.

The year was 1984... I was a 13-year old obsessed with Corvettes... My mom's boss came over for a visit and brought his brand new red 1984 IROC-Z, and offered me a ride in it. He took me up and down the street, flooring it and the T-tops were off. This made me love Camaros and I have owned 3 so far.

Also 1984... my dad went out to start our 1984 Ford Escort and was warming it up in front of the house. After a few minutes, I looked outside and was wondering who was BBQing in February.... The car burnt to the ground, melted and fused with the pavement. Since then I have hated Fords.

Fast forward ten years, bought a 1994 Dakota, first week, fuel pump dies, won't start. Then after several more problems in the first year of ownership, I got rid of it before I was sent to Korea for a year. Soured my view of Dodge for a while. Bought a used 1992 Camaro RS 5.0 V-8 and drove it for about 5 years until my first daughter was born in 1999. Then I traded it for a Saturn SL2, and was miserable for about a decade in boring 4-doors.

In 2010 I bought a Camaro 1SS automatic, drove it about 55K problem-free miles, until I sold it in 2019 when I moved across the country. Now, I have my '22 Camaro LT-1, hoping it is as reliable as my 5th gen, and still won't look at a Ford or a Dodge product.

I bought my car in 2018, and I was shopping all 3 muscle cars (Challenger, Mustang, and Camaro). At the time there were plenty of cars on the dealer lots, so I was shopping what was available in my area. My only requirement on the car was that I wanted a 6 speed, which all 3 came in. I guess I was a bit biased towards a Camaro as I was just coming from a 02 Trans Am WS6, but I was open to any.

I was able to rule out the Challenger pretty quickly, because well, I simply couldn't find any 6 speed ones around me. I wanted a Scat-pack which on their own were hard to find, and none existed in 6 speed anywhere near me. I looked at Mustang next and test drove a base 5.0 6-speed. While it drove nice, it didn't come with very much. The base tiny 3-inch infotainment screen or whatever it was is pretty lame for a 2018 vehicle, and was a big turn off. Next car I looked at were Camaro's, and you simply got more for less $ in the Camaro. The standard 8 inch screen is nice. Then I found the 1LE package and it was over after that. The 1LE package addressed perfectly any short-comings of the base 1SS for my needs. In order to get what I got in the 1SS 1LE I would have to get a Premium GT with (at the time) Performance Pack 2. This put the Mustang about 4k higher than the Camaro. Add on top of that I got my car for 5k under MSRP and it was a steal. I am so happy I bought my car when I did seeing what is going on in the car market today.

Two big reasons for me both relate to interior. The Dodge is a Dodge interior, unchanged for a million years. It was just like sitting in my wife's '15 Durango but with suede which I also don't find desirable.
The Mustang seat felt so high up, like I was sitting on a booster seat. I did test it immediately after testing the Camaro, so the difference may have felt exaggerated a bit. The door sills are really high in the Camaro though. Would be nice if they were just a bit lower but it would mess with the whole design of the car.

For me the Camaro was the best fit even though mine is a LT1 it handled the curves IMO better than the GT and both the GT and LT1 did way better than the Challenger scat pack. The Camaro reminded me of the Miata I drove several years ago when going into and out of the curves. The 1LE is going to be better than the LT1 on the curves but the LT1 is still a great handling vehicle.

My only concern with the Camaro was visibility since journalists complained about it a lot but I adjusted my mirrors and never had a problem with it from the test drive so the only concern I had was gone on the 1SS and LT1 I test drove. Even today when I drive it during rush hour on the interstate here that handles 180-200k vehicles per day no issues with visibility.

Dodge insides are garbage quality and mustangs insides were the most annoying layout of controls I've ever seen.

To be frank, I rented a mustang and there's a hump in the floorboard that made my 6 pack fall over and that was all I needed to know

I was open to a new Mustang 5.0, a Challenger Scat Pack, or a Camaro SS/LT1. I needed something that would allow me to live within my means financially (in terms of a monthly payment). I needed a V8 and a manual transmission, and I needed a warranty and to be able to daily the car.

Mustang was out because I couldn't lease it, and couldn't afford a new one with the warranty I needed.

Challenger was too expensive. Dealer told me "there's a $5k markup bud" in the most smug way possible so they lost my business. They then called me twice a day for the next month.

So I came to the Camaro. Found that the LT1 has an absurdly cheap lease rate. Optioned one up and ordered it. Turns out by complete accident, I happened to pick the best of the three. Best platform, handles extremely well, very fast, looks amazing, etc. I'm happy I ended up with this.
