Because some idiot product manager at GM thought it was a good idea to spend money on a feature no one will use, and then didn't spec it correctly to actually fit a large portions of phones that have wireless charging.

OK, to continue the story. The GM chat bot did not know what it was talking about. The S7 charges just fine once you find the sweet spot. After quite a few failed attempts, I have found that it works great if you lay the phone corner to corner on the charging pad with the head towards the driver and drivers door. I put two small velcro dots on the charger pad and the back of the phone to hold it in that position and now it works like a champ. I did remove the rubber pad to make allowance for the height of the velcro...

My S7 charges fine all the time. I just drop it on, I don't even have to adjust it.

Yeah! Another thread of worthless complaining.

But wait, how about a suggestion? Why not put a couple of usb ports back there?

The wireless charger is redundant.

The big breakthrough with the 2016 was the ability to use CarPlay and Android Auto. I don't know about Android but CarPlay requires plugging in to work. So even if I had wireless charging I wouldn't be using it since I am already charging with the phone plugged in for CarPlay.

If it makes anyone feel any better.

My Nexus 6 can't charge in a Silverado either. It's too narrow.

I'm waiting for someone to remove the charger and modify that space for something useful.

So to sum it up.

The wireless charging pad is completely pointless.

A. Nobody is in the back seat to use it.
B. The driver or passenger has a phone plugged into android Auto or carplay.
C. The other person has another port to plug into, allowing their phone to not be behind them out of sight and hard to reach and falling onto the floor or not fitting to start with on the wireless charger.

It would be great if it had any use since i wirelessly charge all the time but so long as Android Auto requires a connection to work, that's how my phone is connected.

I took the cover off my S7 and it worked...

Kinda of. In an hour of driving it charged 3%. It wasn't being used in any way that whole time either, other than being on.

For those wishing to remove the wireless charger, I found a parts breakdown that shows what parts are needed. You would replace the endcap of the console to the one that did not have the charger in it. Cost looks to be about $55. Scroll down the parts list until you see the endcaps and description.
Here's the link:

Here are some pics of the console end pieces without the wireless charger that you can compare to the parts breakdown in my previous post.

The wireless charging module only costs $155... how obvious it would be for GM to upgrade it to a model with higher amperage and larger pad size, then sell it as an LPO and/or accessory upgrade. People would at least have a chance to have it work with newer phones.

That would be cool. And it would be nice if they supported wireless car play when it came out. Then this would be useful :D
